The two magic letters - RS
05/10/2018
When car enthusiasts hear the abbreviation "RS", they usually prick up their ears. And they don't think of Ford or Audi first, but of Porsche, where the two letters stand for "Renn Sport". The additional designation was introduced with the Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7 in 1972, and it is no coincidence that this sports car is one of the most sought-after and expensive products from Zuffenhausen.
At the time, the differences to the fastest previous model were not even that great. Visually, the Carrera RS differed from the 911 S mainly due to its "duck tail". But the combination of omission and less weight, in conjunction with 20 extra horsepower that the fuel-injected engine shook out of the six air-cooled cylinders, was explosive, as every test driver immediately realized after a few meters. Even significantly more expensive sports cars could be kept at bay. At the same time, the rear-engined sports car produced a sound that was electrifying and addictive.
No wonder so many people want to buy it. And no wonder it was initially limited to 500 copies. And even though 1580 were built, people still love the Carrera RS 2.7 today, which has led to an enormous increase in value over the decades.
We will be publishing a detailed driving report soon, as we had the pleasure of sitting in one of these special Zuffenhausen cars once again. We already wrote a longer report on the entire history of the car a few years ago.
