Similarities and differences - De Tomaso Pantera and Porsche 928
They were both green (in our photos) and they both had a V8 engine with a large displacement. And they had folding headlights, albeit in very different shapes. But these were actually almost the only parallels between the De Tomaso Panteraand the Porsche 928.
The Pantera came earlier and stayed longer. With its Ford mid-engine, it sold very well at first, but later only sluggishly, which had to do with Ford's support or lack thereof.
The Porsche 928 had set out to inherit the 911 and lead Porsche into a modern future. Mission failed. Even today, the 911 still has its engine at the rear, while front-engined Porsches are only available as off-road vehicles or the Panamera.
What they both have in common is that they became icons. In terms of design, the Porsche 928 was a unique car that left no one cold. It embodied what was possible at the time.
The De Tomaso was the super sports car at a budget price. It undercut a similarly fast Ferrari by almost half in terms of cost, and it still looked really good.
