In the early days of the automobile, seats were usually covered in leather, but in the middle of the 20th century, manufacturers discovered alternatives. Fabric-covered seats soon became chic, while vinyl/artificial leather was used a little later, mainly for reasons of cost and ease of maintenance.
Time and again, however, fabrics with check patterns appeared. This already existed on the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL ...
... and it was practically part of the character of the VW Golf GTI.
The Japanese also used check fabrics (Mitsubishi Sapporo), ...
... as did the British (Triumph TR7).
And even in the 1980s (Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.5-16), the likeable fabrics were still popular, ...
... they still are today.
