It looks worse than it was. In fact, we are not looking at an actual accident here, but a simulation that was intended to inform viewers in 1962 what to do if an accident happened. The Automobil Revuereported on it in detail at the time.
The show was presented in the run-up to a Tour de Suisse drive-through in Diessenhofen and because they wanted to get the audience in the mood first, a stunt driver in a Simca provided some surprising moments beforehand.
Yes, that was the time before YouTube and the like, when road users were still "educated" in the real world.
