When modern technology also helps classic cars - instrument restoration
12/19/2016
Anyone who restored car instruments in the seventies or eighties had to be prepared for a time-consuming process when it came to regenerating or even creating a new dial.
The computer and modern printers have made this much easier, as we recently saw during a visit to the" Autometer" company. Not only is it much easier to produce individual pieces, but as soon as a dial is needed for the second time, working on the computer pays off twice over. Even engraving is possible from the computer template, thanks to modern 3D cutters.
Instruments then shine in new splendor or, if desired, in the same patina (coloring) as the other clocks in the dashboard.
We are currently writing a detailed article on the challenges involved in repairing and restoring instruments (and what is possible and what is not) for the next issue of Swiss Classics Revue.
