Rarity before practicality in the Porsche Turbo
12/25/2016
The development in value of the Porsche 911 Turbo has some exciting aspects. In addition to the almost explosive increase in value from 2014 onwards, another phenomenon becomes apparent when comparing the market prices of the various models over the years (based on the published Classic Data figures).
Up until 2014, the Turbo behaved more like a used car on the classic car market. It was not the rarest model that was the most valuable, but the most modern and best. 930 Turbos with 3.3-liter engines and five-speed gearboxes were more popular than the 3.0-liter with four-speed gearbox presented in 1974. It was only when the real collectors, who were themselves looking for value appreciation, took hold that the picture changed and the original Turbo, of which fewer than 3000 were built, became the most valuable model.
We recently published a report on the Porsche 930 Turbo, which also discusses the increase in value and its background.
