Drivers were so colorful

An interesting graphic was shown in Automobil Revue almost exactly 40 years ago. At the time, it was about the choice of color when buying a new car.
The graphic was commented on with the following words:
" Bright colors on the rise - The trend towards bright car colors continues. In the 1976 production planning for the VW Golf, light, bright colors make up the absolute majority at 59.6%, with muted colors accounting for 27.9%. Dark, so-called worn colors are represented by only 12.5%, black by as little as 0.1%. Compared to 1975, there has been a shift of around 2.5% in favor of light colors. Psychologists believe that this is not only a confirmation of the safety mindset, but also a shift towards optimism and open-minded cheerfulness."
Today, 50 years later, "worn" and at best "muted" colors predominate (even in the Golf), and the majority of cars are black, gray or metallic variations thereof. Do we lack the "optimism" mentioned in the AR text today?
