Karl? Why not Kadett?
12/07/2014
Opelhas presented a new model series, "Karl" is to be the name of the newcomer, which is to be positioned somewhere between the Adam and Corsa and will be officially presented to the public at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show.
"The name Karl is derived from the Opel brand values: German, emotional, approachable. The name is also short, crisp, full of character and memorable," says Opel Marketing Director Tina Müller, explaining the naming process.
All well and good, but a little more tradition could also do Opel some good. Especially as the new Opel Karl actually embodies many of the virtues of the former Opel Kadett.
At 3.68 meters, it is a little shorter than the Kadett A, but it still seats five people. The tailgate first appeared on the C-series Kadett City.
An engine with a displacement of one liter was also common in the early Kadett years, but at that time it still had four cylinders, not three.
With a price below 10,000 euros, the Karl appeals to similar segments as the Kadett used to. According to Opel, it is the ideal car for price-conscious customers who want to combine everyday practicality with comfort and modern technologies, which is also reminiscent of the Kadett. A missed opportunity to revive a well-established and popular name?
