The car owner's fear of the vehicle inspection
04/02/2014
You always feel a bit queasy when you drive up to the TÜV or MFK (motor vehicle inspection) in a classic car. 13:29 was the time on the "invitation" and so I drove to the test center yesterday. Of course I had checked everything and the car was prepared for the inspection, but at the end of the day you're driving an old car and some things are a matter of opinion.
Would the inspector have the necessary feel for yesterday's technology? Hopefully the long winter hadn't left any unpleasant marks, I thought to myself and drove onto the test track.
Now my nerves were even more tense, but a friendly vehicle inspector greeted me with a firm handshake. Oops, I thought, the young man was probably born after my car.
The vehicle expert soon disappeared under the car, shaking here, shaking there, looking at potential weak points. When he reappeared, there was nothing to indicate whether he was satisfied or whether he had discovered any defects.
On to the brake test and the shock absorber test, the inspector still didn't make a face, but always remained friendly. He didn't seem dissatisfied with the lighting system either and the final brake test outside (including the handbrake) didn't elicit any criticism from him either.
"Everything's fine", said the young man, handed me the vehicle documents and said goodbye with the words: "Now you have a good two years of peace and quiet".
So there you go. It wasn't so bad after all and my heart rate was able to return to a normal level. Until the next time or the next car ...
