From Alfa to Porsche to Trabi and VW - united in one race!
Over 50 vehicles in one race is already an exception at a historic racing event. But when there are also twenty different brands competing at the same time, and the cars competing also represent a period of over 25 years, then there is more than just a splash of color.
For years, the races for the Dutch Youngtimer Touring Car Challenge have been one of the highlights of the Hockenheim Historics and the field will not disappoint in 2014 either. New and interesting vehicles appear every year.
At yesterday's race, for example, you could see a Rover 3500 SD1, a Porsche 904, a Lotus Europa, a Ford Escort (dog bone), an Alfa Romeo 75, a Jide 2 Litre, a VW Beetle or an Audi 80 GTE doing their laps at the same time as a BMW M1, Porsche 935 K3 or Chevrolet Camaro.
The battles were fierce and the overtaking maneuvers did not always go smoothly. For example, a Porsche bumped a Trabant 601 off the track, causing it to come to a halt on its side.
With the help of the marshals, however, the car could be righted and at least towed away.
The safety car also had to take to the track once, but it was above all the courageous driving style of the drivers that thrilled the spectators. The bright red Golf, for example, lifted its right rear wheel every time in the bend at the start of the home straight ...
