On July 24, 2012, historic racing cars will thunder around the Oerlikon racetrack in Indianapolis style for the 10th time
Next Tuesday, around 60 selected vehicles will once again make the 333.3-metre-long oval in Oerlikon (Zurich) tremble and ensure the biggest crowd of the whole year at the racetrack. Last year, around 4,000 spectators came to Oerlikon. With plenty of action, expert discussions and a festival restaurant, they celebrated a sports festival well into the night.
The 10th edition of this mixed event with racing cars, motorcycles, sidecars and a standing bike race is set to be no different. An unusual tribute for the oldest sports venue in Switzerland. The architecturally attractive concrete oval was built in 1912, so it is now exactly one hundred years old.
Special treats this year include special Indianapolis racing cars from the 1930s. Major American brands will be united in a unique racing field: Buick Indy-Racer and Buick Bulldog, Nash Aeropower, Stutz Racer, Ford Elmer Special and Miller Sprintcar.
European racing car classics from some long-forgotten brands will also give the audience goosebumps: an Amilcar Kompressor from 1927, a Bugatti T35B from 1929, an MG K1 from 1931, an Alvis Greenfell from 1932 and the incomparable Maserati 8 CM from 1933.
The rapid technical development of the post-war period is documented by the brute Maserati 250F from 1956, the almost fragile-looking Cooper Formula 1 from 1965, a Lotus 59 Formula from 1969 as driven by Jochen Rindt and Graham Hill and a March 703 from 1970.
A Sauber is also a must at the anniversary event. Max Kilchenmann's yellow C1 from 1970 is the Hinwil F1 team boss's first car, which was christened Käseschnitte because of its rustic shape.
