111 years of motorsport?
07/03/2012
Mercedes makes history at the Norisring. The car with the three-pointed star wins the DTM race in the last corner of the last lap against BMW. Mercedes-Benz also celebrates 111 years of motorsport with the slogan: "Not a second without passion"!
Yet there are actually almost exactly 1,040,688,000 seconds or the equivalent of 33 years missing. Or what happened between 1955 and 1989? As far as I can remember, not a single factory star made its rounds during this period. Only AMG sporadically entered one or two Mercedes in the touring car scene and the factory occasionally entered vehicles in rallying. It was the Swiss Peter Sauber who took the decisive step of bringing the Stuttgart-based company back to the world's racetracks with the Mercedes-powered C9.
Another, albeit minor, mistake was also noticed at the anniversary stand: Schumacher's F1 dates back to 2011, when it was only 110 years of motorsport.
