Formula V - entry-level Volkswagen monoposto formula
05/17/2011
In the sixties and seventies, Formula Vee offered a great one-make cup for newcomers to formula racing. The cars were nothing more than "monoposto Beetles". The engine, gearbox and wheel suspensions had to come from the VW Beetle. In 1965, Formula Vee found its way across the Atlantic to Europe. The first race took place at the Norisring.
The Formula V at that time was powered by the 1.2 l Beetle engine and reached a top speed of approx.150 km/h with its 34 hp!
In 1966, the 1.3-liter engine was upgraded and the little racers were now on the road with around 52 hp. Further "updates" followed and the cars became faster and faster. In 1973, Keke Rosberg, the father of Nico Rosberg, raced around the Nordschleife in 8:56.2 with an average speed of 153.3 km/h in the 100 hp Formula Vee.
Formula Vee was factory-supported by Volkswagen until 1977!
The picture shows "mother" and "child" chasing each other over the asphalt. It is interesting to note that the Beetles seem to be holding their own against the much smaller and lighter formula cars.
