100 years of the Monte Carlo Rally - the big zwischengas special
01/23/2011
It has been a hundred years since the first Monte Carlo Rally, at that time still just a rally, was started. Since then, this prominent event has taken place every year, with the exception of the years 1913-1923, 1940-1948, 1957 and 1974, transforming itself from a social event to a racing endurance test and a motorsport marketing event, and can confidently be described as one of the most important motorsport events in history.
Reason enough, therefore, to publish the first zwischengas special! It starts with an insight into the zwischengas archive. References to interesting reports from the last 100 years are summarized and richly illustrated in an overview article .
The central element of the zwischengas "100 years of the Monte Carlo Rally" special, however, is the series of articles by Bernhard Brägger. The well-known motor journalist has summarized the essence of each individual event, added personal thoughts and interesting anecdotes and created wonderful reports - exclusively for zwischengas.com - that show how the Monte Carlo Rally has changed time and again. These reports are complemented by well over 200 photos, route drawings and historical documents from the history of the Monte Carlo Rally. The series obviously begins with the year 1911 and each article refers to the preceding or following one. An overview of all articlesis also available. A search with the keyword "RMCS100" shows an overview of all articles.
Of course, the vehicles that took part in the Monte Carlo Rally are also of interest. Two of these are portrayed, the Aston Martin DB 2 4, in which Ken Carter took part in 1956, and the Mini Cooper S, which Irishman Hopkirk drove to victory in 1964.
Regardless of whether you are interested in the early years or the late Group B times with horsepower-boosting racing monsters, there is something for everyone and it is guaranteed that there is a lot of interesting and sometimes unknown information hidden in the articles.
