The missing magazine - what Auto Motor und Sport knew to report 27 years ago
10/11/2017
Yes, there was exactly one issue that had been missing from our collection of Auto-Motor-und-Sport issues from 1947 to 2000. And the people at Motorpresse were able to help us and sent us issue 1/1990, sensibly published on December 29, 1989.
We were delighted, because we still had a lot to do with the magazines. And of course we leafed through the magazine with great interest ... and wondered how much we had already forgotten in the last 30 years.
In 1989, AMS compared the VW Passat with the BMW 318i and the Opel Vectra and who won? The Passat. Nice to see the photos with the sports cars!
The AMS editors were also able to test drive (and photograph) the Pininfarina prototype Ferrari Mythos on public roads and they found the 2.1 meter width very unusual - today every Q7 driver is very familiar with it.
However, another exercise carried out by the AMS editorial team at the time was downright unbelievable. They had everyone use public transportation for a week and found out that it was neither cheaper nor faster.
Then there were retrofit catalytic converters, which were used to save taxes at the time. And the famous Hynaudières straight at Le Mans also provided material for a story, as it was defused by two chicanes for 1990.
Another thing that caught our eye was a Sony advertisement, which, long before YouTube and the ever-popular cat videos, was already focusing on the pretty kitty cats.
Yes, that's how it was 27 or 28 years ago.
