Solar cells on the Corvette?

On seeing a Chevrolet Corvette C2 of the earliest production, a bright young boy says: "Look Daddy, it has solar cells on the hood".
Of course, no GM engineer in the 1960s would have thought of transplanting solar cells onto a sports car and so the supposed solar cells are nothing more than decorations on the hood, they had no function. But they do indeed resemble solar cells.
Not that there were no solar cells in 1962/1963; in fact, space engineers transplanted a satellite with these energy-collecting cells for the first time as early as 1958.
These apparent air inlets disappeared for the second model year. A pity really, as they looked quite attractive.
