... MAINTENANCE Frost Precautions: During freezing weather an antifreeze com pound should be added to the coolant in the radiator. Always flush the cooling system before adding an antifreeze solution, and again when removing it in the Spring. The manufacturers of antifreeze will provide a table indicating the quantity to be used in providing full protection against any degree of frost. The strength of the solution must be maintained by toppingup with antifreeze solution as necessary. Excessive toppingup with water will reduce the degree of frost protection. The following are officially approved antifreeze compounds: Smith’s ‘BluecoF; Shell ‘Snowflake’; Esso ‘Antifreeze’. N.B. Where a heater is fitted under no circumstances resort to draining the cooling system as an alternative to the use of antifreeze, due to the fact that it is not possible to drain the heater unit completely by means of the cylinder block and radiator drain cocks. HEATING AND DEMISTING T H E Smith’s heating and demisting system is designed to provide -*■ heated fresh air to the car interior at floor level and to the wind screen for demisting and defrosting. Air for the heater is drawn from a forwardfacing intake via an auxiliary blower which should only be needed at speeds below about 25 m.p.h.
