Hans Herrmann deceased (obituary)
01/10/2026
The article we published about Hans Herrmann a good five years ago was entitled "Hans in luck with luck". And the talented racing driver was lucky a few times in his career. But he survived and retired from active motorsport after his Le Mans victory in 1970, after his 13th start in the department Sarthe.
Nevertheless, he remained connected to cars and racing until the end of his life yesterday, January 9, 2026, at the age of 97.
He was frequently seen at historic racing events, but also at trade fairs and other events. And he was always good for an exciting anecdote, such as the time he drove his Porsche 550 Spyder under a railroad barrier at the Mille Miglia so as not to lose any time before the approaching express train.
Herrmann raced for various car manufacturers, including Mercedes-Benz and Borgward. However, many of his successes are also associated with the Porsche brand.
Herrmann saw 40 of his fellow racing drivers die during his active career, and he himself was not uninjured, finding himself in hospital several times. This made him all the more sympathetic to his wife, who asked him to retire if he won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1970. Herrmann promised and kept his word.
We will miss him. Our deepest sympathy goes to his family, his loved ones and all those who were close to him.
