7:49.758 minutes minus 1.041 seconds...
... is exactly 7:48.717 minutes! What Max Verstappen had missed, Fabio Scherer (26), who lives in Engelberg, made up for. He beat the three-year-old lap record for GT3 vehicles on the Nordschleife by an incredible 1.041 seconds in his Ford Mustang. Fabio achieved this miracle in qualifying for his second outing in the tenth and final round of the NLS. "That came as a complete surprise to me too. But it's one of the records that is particularly valuable, so it means a lot to me," laughs Fabio.
Times under eight minutes are damn fast in a GT3 car, and everything has to be spot on over the 24 kilometers to bang such a time into the asphalt. "The feeling on the lap was good. Everything was perfect, but I didn't have a watch in the car. When I realized the time, it almost hit me. Especially as I only know the Green Hell from about 20 real laps and about 50 simulator laps. I memorized the track with various onboard videos," says the man from Engelberg enthusiastically.
Let's remember that the fastest Formula 1 lap on the Nordschleife was also driven by a Swiss and of course still stands today. In 1975, Clay Regazzoni completed the then slightly shorter version (without today's GP circuit, but with the southern loop totaling 22.835 km) in a Ferrari 312T in 7:06.400 minutes. The absolute track record is held by Timo Bernhard in the Porsche 919 Hybrid with 5:19.546 minutes (but without any traffic), who clearly beat the 35-year-old record set by Stefan Bellof in the Porsche 956 (6:11.13 min) in 2018.
