The first ADAC 24-hour race took place at the Nürburgring 42 years ago
The 40th ADAC 24-hour race at the Nürburgring starts today at 16:00. The first official staging took place in 1970 and the event was canceled three times due to the oil crisis and modifications. The first race was won by Hans Joachim Stuck and Clemens Schickentanz in a BMW 2002 TI and the next three editions also went to BMW. In 1973, Niki Lauda won together with Hans Peter Joisten in a BMW 3.3 CSL Coupé from Alpina, although an eight-hour night's rest was imposed for safety reasons.
The list of winners includes famous drivers such as Klaus Ludwig, Emanele Pirro, Johnny Cecotto, Joachim Winkelhock, Armin Hahne, Christian Danner, etc. as well as legendary vehicles such as the Porsche Carrera RSR in various versions, BMW 3.0/3.3 CSL, M3, Ford Escort RS 2000 or Chrysler Viper, to name but a few.
Over the years, the ADAC 24-hour race at the Nürburgring has blossomed into one of the most popular racing events of all, attracting hundreds of thousands of spectators and offering motorsport just like we did thirty and forty years ago.
