Brazilian affair - Volkswagen SP 2 from 1972
Press photos sometimes write their own story, like this picture of the Volkswagen SP 2, which was sent to editors in 1972. Due to delivery problems, the wheels of the SP 1 were mounted on the SP 2 for the photo shoot. The two models differed in engine size: while the SP 2 had 1.7 liters and 65 hp, the SP 1 with 1.6 liters only had 54 hp.
The VW SP 2 (and SP 1) was a beautiful sports car developed by the Brazilian branch of VW and produced between 1972 and 1976. In view of their weight (around 890 kg), both models were said to be somewhat underpowered.
Only very few vehicles made it to Europe, which is why they are rarely seen in our latitudes. And this despite the fact that Automobil Revue wrote in December 1972 on the occasion of the Sao Paolo Motor Show: "The VW sports car, which has been on sale since June and for which export plans exist - it will probably also be produced in Wolfsburg sooner or later - was the highlight of the largest stand at this year's exhibition."
