My demonstration drive with the BMW 320 Group 5 from 1977
05/01/2012
I immediately felt at home again in the 35-year-old and very conservative cockpit of the BMW 320 Group 5! I also remembered the sound of the four-cylinder engine.
Then we set off, but the first thing I did when driving off was to stall the engine. The 320 has a rear axle without a differential. This means that the inside wheel has to spin in tight bends, which of course requires power. I didn't give it enough of this power in the form of gas.
But after this somewhat embarrassing start, the whole memory came back quickly.
As if I'd got out of the car yesterday, I drove around the Hockenheimring, which was new to the car, I shifted again with the tip/heeled intermediate throttle and felt the car under my backside. After one lap, I already had the good feeling that I could drive the BMW at the limit again. Unfortunately, however, the chequered flag came down at the end of the third lap.
What impressed me most was how much can be stored in a human brain, how quickly all the memories came back. But there are only 35 years in between.
Extensive memories of the BMW 320 and the experiences and events of that timeare published in a detailed article.
