Do you know this one? Nissan 126 X
When you read the current headlines about car manufacturer Nissanwith plant closures and mass redundancies, the press release from 1970 seems a little strange. Back then, they were talking about "Japan's leading car manufacturer Nissan". And this proud company showed two concept studies, the 126 X and the 270 X, at the 17th Tokyo Motor Show in December 1970.
The 126 X pictured above was described as an "Inter City Car" and featured an aerodynamic four-seater coupé body. The six-cylinder engine with fuel injection mounted in front of the rear drive axle was said to have 180 hp. The automatic transmission was electronically controlled and an anti-lock braking system was also on board.
In contrast, the 270 X had front-wheel drive. The engine came from the Nissan Cherry and had a displacement of 1171 cm3. Thanks to the fuel injection system, however, driving performance was expected that matched the extravagant exterior with its folding roof section.
Neither of the two show cars made it into series production, not even close. But the two cars proved that dreams were big back then.
