Design under the hood
05/27/2025
Nowadays, almost everything is hidden from you when you look under the hood and if that is "allowed"/intended at all.
Instead, in modern cars you can see the ideas of how a designer imagines the engine compartment, e.g. in the current BMW M5 ...
... or the VW with TDI engine.
In the past, of course, it was completely different. It wasn't the designer who was in charge, but the engineer or, as in the above example of the Alfa Romeo Giulia SS, the engineer.
Even in the Jaguar XK120, it wasn't designers who created the engine, but engineers.
In the case of the Lamborghini Miura, it was probably the young developers who determined what the engine should look like.
And at Bugatti (picture at the top), design finesse and aesthetics came together almost perfectly.
However, the Porsche Carrera GT from 2005 proves that the meeting of design and engineering doesn't have to look bad ...
... or the Maserati Spyder from 2003.
P.S. Our readers are sure to know of other interesting examples!
