Snapshot for eternity
We know, and not just from Daniel Reinhard's books, that as a motorsport photographer you sometimes just have to be lucky and press the right button in the right place at the right time to take the perfect picture. What at first glance looks like a photomontage actually happened 60 years ago today.
In the second round of the USAC Sprint Car Race at the Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio, on April 6, 1964, Bud Tingelstad catapulted his racing car into the air with an impressive spin around its longitudinal axis after the free-standing wheels got in the way of those of a competitor.
Unfortunately, it was not enough for a full barrel roll; the number 8 racer landed on its back like a beetle. But the thin roll bar did its job: Tingelstad survived the crash landing unharmed.
