The "Coupe Gordini" for hot-rodded Renault 8s, held from 1966, is generally regarded as the first one-make cup in automotive history. As a professionally organized racing series with several rounds per season, this may certainly be true. However, there have been individual races limited to a specific make before. For example, at the tenth annual Bahamas Speed Week in 1963, where a pack of 18 VW Beetles was unleashed onto the 7.2-kilometer Oakes Field Course in Nassau. At the front right with starting number 3 and the crooked license plate: the eventual winner Dan Gurney.
