When the once frowned upon returns inconspicuously

When the Austin Allegro came onto the market in 1973, there was almost more talk about the car's steering wheel than about the car itself. This control unit, which had only ever been seen differently in concept cars, was almost square.
Criticism of the square steering wheel was so loud that it disappeared without a trace in 1974 and the Allegro models were accordingly delivered with round steering wheels again.
A lot of time has passed since then and much more adventurous forms of the valance, including the "yoke" from Tesla, have made their appearance. Even traditional manufacturers now offer cars with steering wheels that are flattened at the bottom.
It is obviously no longer noticeable when Ford, for example, returns to the Allegro recipe in the Tourneo and makes the steering wheel almost square.
For our part, however, we still like the really round steering wheels and they don't have to be fitted with super-thick wreaths or be sensitive to operation ...
