Peter O'Donnell was the creative mind behind the secret agent Modesty Blaise. The beautiful young woman first appeared in comic strips, later in short stories, then in novels and finally in films.
The first Modesty Blaise film was released in 1966 and starred Monica Vitti as the articulate agent. Exactly, the same Monica Vitti who, born in 1931, appeared in several Antonioni films from 1957 and made her first international film in the leading role with "Modesty Blaise".
Monica Vitti died on February 2, 2022, and with that, the memories of Modestly Blaise are back. In the aforementioned 1966 film, she is seen driving a 1958 Ferrari 250 GT Cabriolet from the first series, as well as a 1959 Bentley S2 Continental.
In the books, however, it was a Jensen Interceptor that she enjoyed driving. After all, it was precisely this Interceptor that offered a great deal of practicality (tailgate) coupled with Granturismo qualities. The Interceptor didn't make it into the 1966 film, which was a shame because the car suited the sophisticated martial artist and survivalist very well.
The rather confused and over-the-top film from 1966 was only a limited success, something it had in common with the later film adaptations from 1982 and 2003.
