Even then: driving ban for combustion engines
Denmark caused a stir around a year ago because the government wanted to ban petrol cars from 2030. The EU intervened and Denmark rowed back, but the issue is not off the table and is now being discussed at EU level.
A ban on vehicles with combustion engines? It has been done before, albeit less radically. During the 1973 oil crisis, Germany first introduced the controversial measure of speed limits to reduce fuel consumption. In November of the same year, the Swiss government decided to give the people a few car-free Sundays, and other countries followed suit. The highways were used by bike or roller skates, families pushed baby carriages along the expressway and the roads became leisure and meeting zones.
