Long before the H2 car - the water filling station

If the dreams of some car manufacturers come true, we will soon be driving hydrogen cars (H2) en masse. But people were already filling up with water 50 years ago and there was a water filling station on the Stilserjoch, for example.
However, the refill water was not intended to fuel the engine, but to cool it. The press release at the time read: "On the Stelvio Pass in Italy, the water cans at the "cooling water stations" were wisely chained up. This ensures that all drivers whose vehicle radiators are boiling after a long drive up the mountain will find a suitable filler."
Yes, it's hard to imagine having to fill up with water on the top of a mountain pass these days. Modern Golf or A-Class drivers probably wouldn't even know where to fill the cool water. However, 50 years ago, when the photo above was taken, it was still quite common for some water to evaporate after a long drive over the pass ...
