Rinspeed 969 Turbo surfaced
04/14/2018
There was a time when Frank Rinderknecht and his company Rinspeed attracted attention at motor shows not with visionary mobile concepts for the future, but with tangible tuning. For example, in 1983, when Rinderknecht presented a Rinspeed 939 convertible, among other things.
Rinspeed's modifications of the Porsche Turbo caused open mouths and admiring glances at the Geneva Motor Show due to their eye-catching design.
One Brit was no different. He had bought a brand new Porsche 930 Turbo three years earlier, but after seeing the Rinspeed version, he had his Turbo completely rebuilt by Frank Rinderknecht.
The front was replaced and designed with the typical Rinspeed flat snout with the built-in 944 folding headlights. Like the Ferrari Testarossa later on, the flanks featured side boxes and eye-catching air intakes. Incidentally, Rinspeed is said to have shown this design element for the first time before the Ferrari in 1982. The rear end was also modified, wide Gotti rims were fitted and the entire car was painted in pearl white, another typical Rinspeed finish. After completion, the car was shown at the 1984 Geneva Motor Show and then transported across the English Channel. The proud owner certainly attracted attention in Great Britain.
Now this right-hand drive Rinspeed 969 has reappeared. It was recently refurbished after standing around unused for several years. Now it is going under the hammer at the Silverstone Auction on May 19, 2018 and is expected to fetch a sale price of £80,000 to £90,000. This is not impossible, after all, Porsche 930 Turbos are sought-after and this Swiss Rinspeed variant is guaranteed to be a rarity these days. But you do need to have a special taste ...
