When Dani Reinhard and Colin McRae kicked up the English dust...
The story about the WRC Ford Focus by and with Colin McRae was written for the magazine "auto motor und sport" in 1999. We were invited to a gravel test track in the far north of England to create the necessary photographic material. The weather was perfect and Colin McRae really let the Focus fly for us.
The photos were all taken with analog cameras and I let myself get more or less dusty in various places, which wasn't quite as tricky in the analog age as it is with today's digital cameras. My absolutely crazy idea at the time to create a "car to car" situation (i.e. where a photographer from a car in front photographs the car in pursuit while driving) on gravel was granted.
Strapped into the trunk of a second car, I let myself be piloted over the gravel road in front of McRae's Focus. We had to drive quickly to allow Colin to do some great drifts. As you can clearly see in the pictures, "my" photo car also caused a large plume of dust, some of which was naturally sucked into the open rear of the car. You can imagine what the photographer and the interior of the car looked like after the wild ride.
I was able to rinse half of England off my body with a shower at home late in the evening, and all the bruises on my body that I had picked up from the self-imposed abuse in the trunk slowly began to show.
