Do you know this one? Mercury Capri II
06/08/2017
We all know it as the European Ford Capri, but in the 1970s Ford saw an opportunity to make the American market happy with it too. The Capri I was sold in America from 1971 to 1974, the Capri II from 1976 to 1977, when the cars became too expensive due to exchange rate problems.
The Ford Capri was also a success in the USA; over half a million are said to have been imported from Germany to America.
Bonhams auctioned a particularly beautiful example of the especially rare luxury variant, which was sold as a Mercury Capri, at the Greenwich Sale on June 4, 2017 for a reasonable USD 15,950. It was a Mercury Capri 2.8 liter (power 109 hp at 4800 rpm) from 1976.
With its upscale interior, the Mercury Capri II looked significantly more expensive than some European variants and the American bumpers also distinguished it from the local version. It was equipped with the same engines as in Europe, namely the two Cologne six-cylinder engines with a displacement of 2.6 and 2.8 liters. The Mercury Lincoln Group was responsible for sales at the time.
Given its original condition and less than 27,000 miles on the clock, this Mercury Capri II was certainly a purchase worth considering.
