Classic pearls of the future - Porsche Cayman GT4
12/14/2015
Normally, we let a few years pass and see how a new car develops on the market and how buyers receive the car before we honor a vehicle as a classic of the future. With the Porsche Cayman GT4, however, the Zuffenhausen-based manufacturer has probably done everything right to build a so-called "instant classic".
The Porsche Cayman GT4 is of course based on the normal closed production sports car from the Boxter/Cayman series (type 918c). However, the GT4, which was presented in 2015, has a lot going on under the sheet steel: the engine with 3.8-liter displacement and 385 hp was taken from the 911 Carrera S, while parts of the suspension and braking system come from the Porsche 911 GT3.
And the best thing? Stuttgart exercised restraint, dispensing with a DSG and sticking with the six-speed manual gearbox. And the price was set at a still affordable EUR 85,776 (CHF 104,700).
In any case, the annual production run was sold out in no time at all, and the GT4 struck a chord with the Porsche fan community with its fixed, racing-inspired rear spoiler. And the fact that it also showed a lot of talent on the racetrack didn't hurt its reputation either, of course.
So you don't have to be a medium to predict high demand for the GT4 in the future, especially if the numbers remain manageable and Porsche doesn't suddenly come up with the idea of flooding the market with them.
