Could size M5 fit you?
04/25/2015
The BMW advertisement in 1992 asked precisely this question: "Could size M5 suit you?". Well, back then this was a really expensive pleasure, but since then the first M5s of the E28 and E34 series have gone through the typical value curve and are probably past their nadir.
With a BMWM5 from the first two model series, you get very lively cars, which in the case of the E28 benefit from the legendary six-cylinder engine of the M1 and in the case of the successor E34 were given even more power. Typical of the E28 and E34 variants is that they were all manual gearboxes and still had manageable dimensions.
They were a lot of fun to drive and are affordable today. Compared to the high-flyer M3 (E30), the M5 models are real bargains. According to market observer Classic Data, the M5 E28 has risen in value somewhat, but Euro 25,000 is still enough for a saloon in rare condition 2, 5% more expensive on average per year.
Even cheaper is the M5 E34, which has 315 hp or even 340 hp on the rear axle, which still costs around half the price of the E28 and is only slowly becoming more valuable.
So, perhaps the question of BMW advertising is even more relevant for some fans today, because now the size M5 could really fit.
For the sake of completeness, here is the entire advertisement from back then, which can of course also be found in large format in our image archive .
