The most sensible dream car in the world
04/26/2015
"Do you know the most sensible dream car in the world?" asked Mercedes Benz in 1966 in advertisements that were the size of a page. And the answer was obvious, of course, because the picture showed a Mercedes-Benz 230 SL.
But the explanation of why the Pagoda was a dream car was interesting:
"Because it has a kind of masculine charm that makes women uneasy. Because it is strong and fast in the hands of a man, but tender and tame in the hands of a woman. Because you can see the sky above you, smell the scent of leather and hold some of the happiness of this earth in your hands."
This makes the 230 SL the most sensible dream car in the world.
Today, 50 years later, the gentlemen (and ladies?) from Stuttgart are even more right, because anyone who bought a Pagoda back then received a reliable car that is now worth three to five times as much with good care, without having invested hundreds of thousands in restorations.
For the sake of completeness, here is the entire advertising page from back then, which can of course also be found in large format in our picture archive .
