At the end of the sixties, people - especially in the USA - were still carving from the solid. If you put spare parts from back then on the scales today, it's hard not to be amazed.
The 14-inch hubcap of a 1969 Plymouth (pictured above), for example, had a center made from a cast alloy and weighed a total of 2.9 kg! You wouldn't want to be hit by one of these hubcaps.
Also interesting is a heater tap for the air conditioning system, as used by Chrysler in Dodge and Plymouth models. The weight of the part, which was necessary for temperature control, is a whopping 1.5 kg.
Yes, some things were probably heavier in the past than they are today, but whether they were better is another question ...
