The very special driving school car
03/07/2014
Most of us learned to drive from a driving instructor who had a specially equipped driving school car with double pedals and additional rear-view mirrors.
However, hardly anyone has ever sat in a vehicle that also had a double steering wheel.
In the 1948 Ford Prefect, the driving instructor was actually in control of the situation, whatever the learner driver did in case of doubt. Of course, the fact that the instruments were already centrally located was to the advantage of the car's developers.
But what happened if the driving instructor and student disagreed on the gear selection and reached for the center gear stick at the same time?
The interesting idea of equipping a car for driving schools with two steering wheels did not find any imitators, as the car proved to be impractical as soon as it was to be used privately with "normal" passengers.
We have Ford England to thank for the beautiful picture.
