Porsche and its Le Mans appearances
03/06/2014
No matter how you look at it, Porsche has written important chapters in Le Mans history. And is now preparing to write the sequel. The 919 Hybrid Le Mans racer was presented in Geneva, and Mark Webber, who drives the car alongside Brendon Hartley, Marc Lieb, Timo Bernhard, Romain Dumas and Neel Jani, was happy to provide information.
But it all began with the red Porsche 917 K (pictured above), which Herrmann and Attwood drove to overall victory in 1970. The following year, Marko/van Lennep won in the unforgotten Martini 917. 14 more overall victories followed until 1998.
Three of the past winning cars - Porsche 917K 1970 , Porsche 956 1982 and Porsche GT 1 1998 - are currently on display in the special Le Mans show at the Geneva Motor Show, so the public presentation of this year's racer was a natural fit.
We will know in a few months whether this constellation is a good omen. Until then, let's take another look at the 16 overall Porsche winners
