Charming old sheet metal at Auto Zürich
11/03/2013
Auto Zürich is a local exhibition of new cars, as is usually the case in other cities on an annual basis. The aim is not to compete with the big motor shows such as Geneva or Frankfurt, but the visitor numbers are nonetheless impressive and prove that interest in cars is unbroken.
We were all the more pleased on our tour that not only new but also many old cars were on display, at least significantly more than at the Geneva Motor Show in March.
On the Porsche stand, for example, there was an original 911 (pictured above) to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the 911 model. This had been missed in Geneva. At the other new car stands, however, the search for classics was in vain; even the Jaguar F-Type, for example, had to make do without its famous predecessor.
However, accessory dealers and insurance companies were happy to focus on old sheet metal, well aware that an old Fiat 500 looks much more appealing than most new cars.
Borrani, the famous spoked wheel manufacturer, even had two Fiat 500s on its stand, the Nuova 500 and the current model.
The VW Bulli and its successor were also on display, again adding a lot of charm to the stand.
The magnificent racing cars presented by Lutziger Classic Cars were also worth a longer look, from the Bizzarrini A3C and the Ford GT40 to the Ford Probe Zakspeed GTP Group C racing car and several Formula 1 and Formula 2 monoposti.
And Americans should not be forgotten, whether they were called Chevrolet Corvette, AC Cobra or Dodge Charger . In any case, the old sheet metal provided many splashes of color and variety in today's usual mishmash of new cars.
