The successful development of Auto Union in the period after the currency reform of 1948 is part of the story of the great reconstruction work in West Germany. As with many other major industrial companies, the collapse and arbitrary division of Germany had created a catastrophic situation for the old Auto Union AG. The remaining production facilities and production documents remained in the GDR and were expropriated without compensation. Only a few subsidiaries as well as patents and trademarks were available in the West when the new Auto Union was founded. In 1949, plans for the construction of new workplaces began to take shape.
