25 years of the VW Corrado
10/11/2013
It's hard to believe, but 25 years ago now, the Volkswagen Corrado was launched in the fall of 1988 as a sports coupé with an electrically extendable rear spoiler and a drag coefficient of 0.32. With the G-Lader, it had 160 hp, and with the VR6 and 2.9 liter displacement, it later even had 190 hp, making it the most powerful Volkswagen of its time.
97,521 units are said to have been built by 1995, when production was discontinued. However, the number is falling, at least in Germany. 364 of these coupés are even said to have fallen victim to the scrappage scheme! Survival rates like Porsche's are out of the question.
Development had already begun in 1981, as it was intended as the successor to the Scirocco II. However, it turned out to be too expensive and was eventually marketed as a high-end model and technology carrier.
In five years' time, the Corrado will already be a classic car and younger generations will probably see it as an exotic model, because in principle there was neither a predecessor nor a successor and the name was only used once.
A driving report on the VW Corrado G60 was published in ADAC Motorwelt 9/1988 and pictures can of course also be found in the Zwischengas archive .
