Carroll Shelby - racing driver and racing entrepreneur
05/14/2012
Carroll Shelby (pictured right next to Dan Gurney, photo copyright Dave Friedman) was almost tireless. When he had to retire from active racing for health reasons, he built his own monument with the AC Cobra. He died four days ago (May 10, 2012) in Dallas at the age of 89.
His greatest racing victory as a driver came at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1959, when he won in the Aston Martin DBR1/300 together with Roy Salvadori.
In addition to the Cobra, which he was responsible for, Shelby also built successful Mustang derivatives together with Ford, which were characterized by higher performance and better driving characteristics.
He continued to realize his automotive dreams into old age and advised Ford on the Ford GT project, among other things.
In Carroll Shelby, we are losing a man who was already a legend during his lifetime, who had gasoline in his blood and who will be remembered as a true "racer".
