His trousers were sharply creased and his curly hair for once had responded, somewhat reluctantly, to a brush and comb. Preston Thomas Tucker was after his first job in the automobile business and he had taken pains to make sure that his prospective employers would be quick to note that he pos sessed the virtues of cleanliness and neatness. He answered questions rapidly, told of his ambitions, his hope to learn everything pos sible about the automotive industry. Then his questioner smiled and announced: "All right, boy. You're hired . . . you'll be office boy for D. McCall White." Young Tucker gulped once and then con gratulated himself. He was going to work directly for one of the most famed men in the industry—D. McCall White, Cadillac's vicepresident in charge of engineering—the man who earlier had been in Europe where he di- D. McCALL WftlTh rected management and engineering activities for such great industries as Daimler Motor Company and D. Napier and Son.
