With a capacity of 1.7 litres it produces greater acceleration than some 2 litre engines! And with exceptional smoothness too, thanks to the 5-bearing crankshaft, 2-piece rubbermounted propshaft, engine vibration damper and special attention paid to balancing. The Rapier engine is the product of many years development and proving. Among the advanced features which contribute to its highperformance 94 bhp are the extensive use of lightweight aluminium alloys—now being used in some of the world’s most expensive cars— a high lift camshaft and extra large valves for easier breathing, a waterheated inlet manifold for the fuellair mixture, twin Zenith!Stromberg carburettors to improve fuel feed, an alternator which keeps the battery charged from the merest tickover upwards. To make life easier, and cut running costs, the engine is carefully laid out to ensure easy accessibility to servicing points such as battery, oil filler, and hydraulic fluid reservoir.
