... Division Chrysler Corporation Detroit 31, Michigan For Immediate Release "Explorer" Sport Coupe Is Shown by Plymouth The Plymouth Explorer, a new experimental twopassenger sport coupe, was shown for the first time at the 1954- Washington (D. C.) Automobile Show. C. B. Thomas, president of the Export Division, Chrysler Corporation, said that the new car and other 1954- cars of the Chrysler, De Soto, Dodge, and Plymouth divisions helped attract large crowds to the show held in the national capital of the United States. Although it is only 54- inches from the ground to the top of its roof, the sparkling light green metalliccolored Plymouth Explorer still has more than 34- inches of headroom, or nearly as much as presentday American production passenger cars, Mr. Thomas said. The body of the Explorer was fashioned by Ghia of Turin, Italy from specifications provided by Chrysler Corporation styling studios in Detroit. Mr. Thomas said that production of the experimental car is not being contemplated at present, but that "the Explorer affords further opportunity to gauge public reaction to a number of brandnew styling ideas." Interesting Front-End From a design standpoint, the frontend treatment of the Explorer is one of its most interesting features. The front of the car is dominated by a large rectangular grille opening, lined with a number of vertical chromed ribs. - more - ...
