An interesting feature of the Imp is its pneumatic accelerator. This unique arrangement is designed to give a more positive and direct throttle control. With a rear engined layout, the accelerator pedal is. of necessity a long way from the carburettor, and mechanical linkages or cable controls are inclined to provide lost motion andv in consequence, a delayed response to the accelerator movement, By simply transmitting air pressure from a single diaphragm unit underneath the foot through a tube to another diaphragm near the carburettor, the driver exercises a new delicacy of control, The clutch of the Imp is an extremely simple and compact design and the inertia of the centre plate has been kept to an absolute minimum. This, in conjunction with the very powerful synchronisers on all four forward speeds, makes the shifting of gears quite effortless, and we consider that this combination of easy gear shifts and low clutch effort constitutes a really substantial advance in the technique of manual gear shifting, AEgcpiMMGS.
