In the daytime, the headlights are down for smooth air flow. When the car is on a track rather than a highway, the front license plate is concealed behind the lower pan for maximum aerodynamic efficiency. Slightly raised nacelles on the rear deck terminate in wide, shallow taillights. Horizontal grilles under the taillights are for engine air exhaust, and twin exhaust pipes protrude through the abruptly tapered rear end. Like the car's exterior, interior of the Mustang is beautiful but completely functional. No excess sheet metal outside, no superfluous trim inside. The instrument panel consists of five large round guages, set high to minimize eye movement from the road. Centered is the tachometer. On the left are a combination fuelampere guage and a speedometer. Oil pressure and water temperature guages are on the right. Holes are drilled in the door handles, assist bar and steering wheel to reduce weight. The racing steering wheel iB of extremely light, strong tubing covered with leather. Foot pedals for clutch, brake and accelerator are the same size and shape, and are designed so that the same amount of foot contact can be maintained at any degree of depression. Since the seat ...
