When improvising is no longer possible

Almost everyone knows the story: the V-belt between the alternator and the engine shaft breaks. The driver asks his wife for one of her stockings, twists it and ties it, thus temporarily replacing the V-belt, at least until the next workshop.
Decades ago, improvised solutions were still needed to keep a car running. Examples would be the installation of bypass cables in the on-board electrical system or the installation of an emergency cable to replace a broken accelerator pedal. Or something similar.
What was once enough to keep the vehicle running has now become impossible. Bus systems, sensors and computers are rarely fooled by manual pull-ups. If the computer has the "feeling" that the car can no longer drive, then it will no longer drive. With the introduction of the CAN bus at the latest, simple emergency solutions have become largely impossible. Even clever hobbyists often can't get any further ...
