When Ascona came close to Capri
04/05/2018
Capri is an island in the Bay of Naples and is famous for its blue grotto, a dark cave in which the sea glows blue due to the sunlight penetrating from below. Ascona is a small Swiss town in the canton of Ticino, known above all for its Mediterranean architecture. The two towns are around 900 km apart geographically. However, in Dijon in 1974 at a Swiss championship race, Capri and Ascona were only a few meters apart.
A duel at the limit of adhesion between Ford and Opel, or Capri and Ascona. The 1970s was a time when exciting races could still be contested with relatively simple equipment. It was possible to have fun on the racetracks with almost normal everyday cars without any great effort. A slightly firmer chassis with four treadless tires went a long way, and then it was almost all down to the driver, in a car that was of course empty and equipped with a roll cage. Today, the material has to be of an extremely high standard to be able to take part in a race at all.
